People today on BlueSky blocked me when I replied to a post with this comment: “I'm a Democrat and I'm opposed to abortion, but I shouldn't have the power to tell other people what they can and cannot do with their bodies.”
I consider myself a Catholic, and I agree with the Church’s position on abortion. It is a consistent life ethic, and the Church has been consistently pro-life (that’s all life, not just fetus life, despite what the bishops of the USA think). The Church helped, helps, and will continue to play a part in shaping my morality and the choices that I make.
That last sentence is the important one. I don’t refer to “your” or “our” or “people’s”, I use “my” and “I”. My choice to align my life feelings to those of my Church is just that, MY choice. Is it your choice? Maybe, maybe not. And that’s my point. Individual morality is just that, individual.
I can defend the choices I make for myself. Well, most of them, I’ve made a few mistakes. Morality is a thing. Yesterday, I posted about hypocrisy and how we all are hypocrites. Morality is that thing somewhere in our brain that tells us right from wrong, good from bad, etc., you get the idea. But it is individual, it is not collective.
So when the Supreme Court (or Congress, for that matter) adjudicates or legalizes something that clearly has moral repercussions, they are taking a very important freedom away. The ability to make moral decisions based on how we see our own morality is not something that can be adjudicated or legislated. It’s really not that hard, and I wish the people who blocked me had tried to understand my perspective.
